For those of you who are doing your best to assist your students to be well prepared for the upcoming STAAR 2.0 Reading and Writing Test, I've come up with a list of 50 very crucial things that you can go over with them during the next couple of weeks to give them the best chance for success!

There have been over two thousand teachers a year who have taken advantage of this opportunity to go over this checklist of all of the reminders which will help students who are forgetful or nervous during this important day.  I've received several hundred thank yous and compliments from teachers who told me this was absolutely the most valuable review tool that they have shared with their students!

For your convenience, I have included the first five of the list below for your reading pleasure:

1 Take your time, but don’t waste it!  Be relaxed and confident.  You are prepared and can do this when the time comes!  Give your best effort the entire time until you finish the test completely or run out of time.  Pay very close attention to the time limit so that you can use your last 10 to 15 minute strategies if needed to not leave any multiple choice answers blank.

2 Do ALL of the strategies that you have been taught to do throughout the year on your online computer as well as lined, blank, and graph paper.  Showing your thought process on paper is sort of like an x-ray to help you select and eliminate the answer choices.

3 Remember to go to the designated location that has your accessibility tools at the moment you have been trained to do so. Your teachers will not be able to tell you to get them on test day due to testing regulations.  These might include some or most of the following: colored pencils, crayons, dry/wet erase/permanent markers, highlighters, damp sponge, Kleenex, tissue, sheet protectors, whisper phones, and any other specifically assigned tools that you have been told by me that YOU are allowed to use as modifications.

4 Unless you have been told otherwise, do the test in the same order that you see the questions online.  Keep in mind that there will be two editing passages, two revising passages, and one ECR prompt page to go along with the reading passages.  For the first two years of STAAR 2.0, the essay is after reading.

5  EDITING STRATEGIES:  Editing passages are improving conventions, and each question is usually only about one or two sentences.  The acronym that contains all editing mistakes is CUPSS.   It stands for ONE capitalization, usage, punctuation, spelling, and sentence boundary mistake such as a run-on or fragments.

As you can tell from this list, even though this product is "called" 50 Nifty Things to share with your students before test day, each number has several points and ideas.  There are most likely 150 to 200 important concepts and test procedures to share with your kids on this 8 page list!
